PORT OF LOS ANGELES RELEASES INITIAL STUDY/NOTICE OF PREPARATION FOR PROPOSED PORT OF LOS ANGELES AND PORT OF LONG BEACH GOODS MOVEMENT WORKFORCE TRAINING FACILITY
SAN PEDRO, Calif. – Feb. 8, 2024 – The Port of Los Angeles has released an Initial Study/Notice of Preparation (IS/NOP) – the first step in the environmental review process – for the proposed Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach Goods Movement Workforce Training Facility. The Port of Los Angeles is the lead agency under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
Located on Port of Los Angeles property in Wilmington, Calif., the proposed project would be the first workforce training facility in the United States dedicated to the goods movement sector with a focus on training in occupations related to longshore work, trucking, and warehousing. Proposed project construction activity involves site preparation, including grading, compacting, and paving, in addition to the construction of buildings, utilities, a substation, and accessory structures to support workforce training activities. Proposed project operations include providing skilled training programs to replicate goods movement environments, such as the use and operation of ship-to-shore cranes, transtainers, top handlers, side picks, forklifts and heavy lifts, while providing a safe training environment for workers. The first training center in the U.S. dedicated to the goods movement industry, the proposed facility would be in operation for up to 30 years.
The IS/NOP is available for review on the Port of Los Angeles website at portoflosangeles.org/ceqa. The IS/NOP is intended to solicit feedback, which helps to identify any potential environmental impacts and suggest possible alternatives for the project that can be incorporated into the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR).
A virtual public meeting will be held for the proposed project at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. No registration is required. The meeting will take place on Zoom.
