PORT OF LOS ANGELES HONORED WITH INFRASTRUCTURE ‘GAMECHANGER’ AWARD FOR PORT OPTIMZER
American Society of Civil Engineers Cites Digital Portal as Helping Pave the Way for Future of Infrastructure Modernization
SAN PEDRO, Calif. – March 11, 2021 – Every four years the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recognizes infrastructure projects around the U.S. that it considers to be Gamechangers — innovative projects and programs that move infrastructure modernization forward. Among this year’s ASCE Gamechanger award recipients is the Port of Los Angeles for its Port Optimizer™, a digital portal providing real-time, data-driven insights for improving the performance and predictability of the port supply chain.
“The efficiency of our nation’s ports is essential to delivering goods in a timely manner and keeping the economy moving,” said Jean-Louis Briaud, Ph.D., P.E., ASCE President. “While many of our efforts to prevent backlogs at these facilities is focused on dredging and the design of intermodal connectors, software can play a major role in keeping track of containers. I applaud the Port of Los Angeles and Wabtec Corp. for developing innovative technology that can help productivity at ports across the nation.”
“Harnessing the power of data to improve cargo efficiency continues to be a priority for the Port of Los Angeles, and our Port Optimizer is at the center of that effort,” said Port Executive Director Gene Seroka. “We are thrilled to be honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers for our digital approach to improving the performance and fluidity of the port supply chain.”
Developed in partnership with Wabtec Corp., the Port Optimizer is a cloud-based information portal that digitizes maritime shipping data for cargo owners and supply chain stakeholders through a secure single access point. By integrating data from across the port ecosystem, the digital portal—which features carrier data that covers 95% of all the Port’s containerized imports—enables ports and the supply chain to operate more efficiently and helps cargo owners bring their goods to market in a more predictable and timely manner.
The Port Optimizer was first introduced by the Port in 2016. Since that time, three other digital applications have been added under the Port Optimizer umbrella. The Signal data tool provides a three-week look at cargo coming into Los Angeles, with information updated daily. The Return Signal data tool lets the trucking community know when and where to return empty containers to cargo terminals throughout the port complex. Just introduced last month, the Control Tower tool offers real-time port-level views of truck turn times, as well as other truck capacity management information, to help cargo owners and other supply chain stakeholders better predict and plan cargo flows.
ASCE designates an infrastructure project as a Gamechanger for a variety of reasons, including innovative technologies; unique funding mechanisms; breakthroughs in construction efficiency through re-imagined design and planning methods or unique collaboration between agencies or private firms; and/or a combination of factors.
The ASCE announced the Gamechanger award winners shortly after releasing its 2021 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, a quadrennial assessment grading the condition and performance of 17 categories of infrastructure. Founded in 1852, the ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society and currently represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries.
The Port of Los Angeles remains open with all terminals operational during the COVID-19 pandemic. North America’s leading seaport by container volume and cargo value, the Port of Los Angeles facilitated $276 billion in trade during 2019. San Pedro Bay port complex operations and commerce facilitate one in nine jobs across the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura.
