MELANIE ROBERTS
Director of Human Resources
Melanie Roberts serves as the Director of Human Resources for the Port of Los Angeles, the nation’s busiest container port. A proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles, the Port is not supported by City taxes and instead generates its revenues from leasing and shipping service fees.
Appointed in August 2025, Ms. Roberts oversees City employment operations for the Harbor Department’s nearly 1,000 employees.
Ms. Roberts began her career with the City of Los Angeles in 2008 as an Accounting Clerk with the Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Street Services. Gaining experience in other City departments, including Los Angeles World Airports, Bureau of Contract Administration and LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN), her promotions to subsequent positions were in administrative and human resource roles.
Most recently, Ms. Roberts served as Senior Personnel Analyst II in the City’s Personnel Department, where she was a liaison to LASAN. Her areas of expertise include employee relations, labor laws, personnel and payroll software navigation, discipline, and research and investigation.
Ms. Roberts has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills and a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix. She also has a certificate from the International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR), now part of the Public Sector Human Resources Association (PSHRA).
