PORT OF LOS ANGELES CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF $15.6 MILLION HARBOR BOULEVARD ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT

SAN PEDRO, Calif. – Jun 7, 2018 – Standing in the newly refurbished Plaza Park with expansive views of the nation’s largest trade gateway, LA City Councilman Joe Buscaino, Port of Los Angeles officials and members of the community marked the completion of the $15.6 million Harbor Boulevard Roadway Improvements Project.

 “The project improves public safety, streamlines traffic and will provide enhanced vehicle and pedestrian access to the San Pedro Public Market,” said Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino. “Next up in this amazing transformation of the LA Waterfront is the construction of a town square and waterfront promenade.” 

“This project exemplifies the Port’s commitment to our Public Access Investment Plan, which has allocated about $400 million in capital for LA Waterfront public access projects,” said Harbor Commission President Jaime Lee. “Next up we’ll begin investing almost $33 million on a new town square at 6th Street and a waterfront promenade in front of the future San Pedro Public Market.”

“Today we celebrate yet another in a long list of milestones that the Port of Los Angeles has accomplished in recent years to transform the LA Waterfront into a world-class, vibrant visitor and tourist destination,” said Los Angeles Harbor Commissioner Anthony Pirozzi Jr. “Completion of this project takes  us one step closer to that vision.”

This roadway construction project involved realigning Harbor Boulevard and extending Miner Street to the intersection of the newly aligned Harbor Boulevard. A new traffic signal was also added at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and 7th Street, as well as bike lanes, marked crosswalks, outdoor lighting, landscaping and walkways. 

The town square and promenade is expected to begin in spring of 2019. The new public promenade will run parallel to the Los Angeles Main Channel for more than a half mile, meeting the new town square at 6th Street, just east of Harbor Boulevard. The promenade and town square will include such amenities as public seating, landscaping, hardscaping, architectural finishes, handrails and lighting.

Refurbishing the historic Plaza Park was also part of the Harbor Boulevard project. The park and its adjacent hillside slope along what is now Miner Street received all new landscaping, including the planting of more than 700 plants and nearly 100 trees. New park benches with unobstructed views of the port were also added.

San Pedro Public Market construction is expected to begin in summer of 2019. The 40-acre, $152 million redevelopment project will feature a vibrant collection of markets, shops, restaurants, plazas and promenades. Approximately $100 million is being invested by the developer and $52 million is being funded directly by the Port. The market is expected to open in 2021.

The Harbor Boulevard Road Improvements Project took just under 18 months to complete. The total project costs of $15.6 million was paid by the Port of Los Angeles, including $8.6 million in grant funding from Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).
