Chief of Los Angeles Port Police
Thomas E. Gazsi is the Deputy Executive Director, Chief of Public Safety and Emergency Management for the Port of Los Angeles, the busiest container port in North America. Appointed December 2014, Chief Gazsi is responsible for Emergency Management and Field Operations with the Los Angeles Port Police, which patrol 43 miles of waterfront and 7,500 acres of land area adjacent to the harbor communities of San Pedro and Wilmington, in the City of Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Port Police is a full-service agency providing Patrol, Traffic, Criminal Investigations, Tactical Planning, Marine Unit, Dive Team, Sea Marshalls and Hazardous Materials Investigations among a variety of operations. The agency hosts the Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center in collaboration with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, providing marine operations training.
Chief Gazsi previously served as the Chief of Police for the Costa Mesa Police Department from 2011 to 2014, an agency of 220 personnel a community of 117,000 in Southern California. The chief previously served as the Support Services Division Commander with the Newport Beach Police Department and was responsible for Management Services, Emergency Management, Communications, Records, Property & Evidence, Personnel & Training, Planning & Research, Facilities, Fleet, Information Technology and Fiscal Services. Chief Gazsi served a full career with the Newport Beach Police Department from 1979 through 2011. He has also been active in supporting a number of nonprofit endeavors and has served on a variety of boards.
Chief Gazsi is a graduate of USC’s School of Public Policy and Management where he earned a bachelor’s degree.
